Greater Binghamton offers all of the amenities of a large city, but with small town charm.
The layout of cities and villages dotted throughout the County keep areas small enough to get to know your neighbors.

Broome County has a very low crime rate, lots of affordable housing, its own opera company and symphony orchestra, a
cinema showing independent films, a university plus a community college with a continuing education department for
non-traditional students, three hospitals, and churches and synagogues of all denominations..

Binghamton has the fifth oldest operating zoo in the United States, and the largest collection of Hershel (Hand Carved & Painted) antique operating Carousels owned, operated and maintained by local municipalities with free admission to all.

Lovers of nature and the outdoors will appreciate the Broome County park system, a nearby state park with camping sites,
lakes, and lots for RVs, and many walking and biking trails. Sports fans will want to attend games of the local double “A”
New York Mets baseball team, that plays in their own 6,000 seat stadium, and the professional AHL hockey team, that
plays at the 5,000 seat Broome County Arena. Both stadiums are located in the heart of the city of Binghamton.

Resident enjoy the change of seasons ~ gorgeous Fall foliage, fun winter activities, the renewal of spring, and LOTS of
summer fun. Temperatures are generally moderate – not extreme. The scenery is beautiful with rolling hills and river
valleys. There is always something to do with events, concerts, shows and a variety of free activities ~ truly something for everyone.

The public transit system is reliable and affordable. Broome County Transit buses serve many residential
communities, commercial areas, and government offices.
Greyhound and Shortline/CoachUSA make it convenient and affordable to travel by bus outside of the local area.

Public transportation is available in Binghamton, Johnson City, Westover, Endicott, Vestal, and Endwell
All Routes, except the 23 and 47, have service seven days a week.
All parts of the city of Binghamton, plus most of Johnson City, and Endicott.have seven-day transit.

Binghamton and Johnson City are the best places to live without a car.

City of Binghamton: South Side:
The neighborhoods surrounding the district are predominately made up of stable single-family residences.
The commercial district, for the most part, serves the commercial needs of residents living in the neighborhoods south of the Susquehanna River. Some regional medical related needs are provided at Binghamton General Hospital and the medical offices that support the hospital. The district includes an entertainment function with restaurants like the Number 5, The Whole in the Wall, Southside Yanni’s, and Grande’s..BC bus #5 Vestal runs along Vestal Parkway.

City of Binghamton: West Side:
The District is generally characterized as a stable single-family neighborhood. The architectural features of the homes in this area were the basis for Binghamton being referred to as “The Parlor City.” Magnificent parlor areas still welcome visitors into homes. The west side is home to Recreation Park a hub of activity and events.
Lourdes Hospital is located in the center of the area on Riverside Drive. BC bus #15 LeRoy runs along Beethoven and Floral Ave.

Johnson City: Harry-L. Drive:
This affordable area includes smaller Cape-Cod houses and many two-family homes.
Residents appreciate its accessibility. It is within walking distance of grocery stores, and an easy walk to shopping plazas and the Oakdale Mall. BC buses 7, 25, and the Shoppers Special serve this neighborhood.

BC Transit Buses serve nearly all important destinations !
The “Shoppers Special” runs west on Vestal Parkway to Town Square Mall and Oakdale Mall.
Transit routes also serve Binghamton University, government offices, libraries, and other places most people need to go. Because BC Transit buses run seven days a week, you can even take the bus to most churches, synagogues or other places of worship.

Visitors without cars should stay in Downtown Binghamton, Vestal Parkway near Binghamton University, Johnson City near Harry –L – Drive, or, Upper Front St near Broome Community College.

Commuters should live near a BC route with frequent service.
Since most communities are only a short distance from downtown Binghamton and other employment centers, regular BC buses are a good choice to get to work. Try to live near a BC Transit route with frequent service.

Cyclists are encouraged to use their bikes on a regular basis!
The New York State Department of Transportation has spent millions of dollars to create bike lanes on most
main roads. All BC Transit fixed route buses have bike racks at no charge.

Broome County invites retirees without cars to consider moving here!
Several neighborhoods are within walking distance of shopping and transit. A growing number of retirees, many from the New York City metropolitan area, are retiring here because of Broome County’s affordabiliy and walkable neighborhoods.

“We have a very active senior community and many senior centers for fellowship and participation.
The Greater Binghamton area’s housing options range from low-cost housing to new construction of a senior community with residential options (nursing care to independent living) and public community space.
